Design Workflow for "Pista sa Nayon" Flyer

FB Events Cover page for FASO's 2016 Spring Social Event
I was given the opportunity to do design for the FASO (Filipino-American Association of Southern Ohio) Spring Social Event. This year is inspired by a Filipino-version of a Mardi Gras-like parade called "Sinulog" which originated from the island of Cebu in Visayan region of the Philippines. I really felt that this is an interesting subject to play around with using illustrator since patterns are an important key to make a believable parade-like feel to the graphic.--that's where illustrator's copy, past, duplicate features come in handy. I know that there's more i can do to play and add detail but i figured given the time constraint it's best to keep things simple but cohesive.

Rough Sketch

Adding Detail to sketch

Scanned and imported sketch to Illustrator. Worked on the vector lines w
ithout paying much attention to color choices.

Using Duplicate Key i repeated patterns to simplify process.

Again utilizing scale, duplicates can add illusion of spatial depth

Here's what the online flyer looks like when everything is put together.

Self-promotional piece

Here's the latest self-promo piece i've been working on. I have always enjoyed doing paper sculpture in the past. I owe this passion from our college professor who commissioned me and 3 other classmates to work on a japanese restaurant menu for a whole summer making design elements made of paper sculpture. In 2010 ,i also made a Tiger piece for a calendar project for Coca-cola. This year I'm planning to send postcards to friends and families who have been really "nice" to me---so i you don't receive one from me maybe you been in my naughty list---just saying...

blocking-in tonal values

I decided this needs some fan-art to make more sense. My daughter typically unwinds after school by watching her favorite cartoon shows on the internet.
